Does a Nicotine Patch Make a Smoker for Life Insurance?

Reader’s Question:

I am trying to quit smoking and I am using a nicotine patch. If I try to get life insurance will they consider me a smoker?

Sherri3,
I applaud your desire to kick the habit and become healthier. Most life insurance companies require that you have exam before they will insure you. Any blood test will reveal that you have nicotine in your blood. The test does not show whether it got there from smoking a cigarette or a nicotine patch. This would raise your rates. You can go with a company that does not require an exam if you are young and healthy, but their rates tend to be higher and if it was discovered that you smoke then you may lose your benefits. Whomever you decide to go with, be honest. The fact that you are quitting is noble but you are still considered a smoker. Be sure to do your homework first and get many quotes so you can make a well informed decision.

Houston Term Life Insurance – Advantages of Term Life Insurance

Reader’s Question:

What are the advantages of Houston term life insurance?

Shane

Houston TX

If your life insurance agent is offering you to get a Houston term life insurance, then you should realize that  this can help you a lot in your finances and future needs. A term life insurance policy stands out among other life insurance policies because it is very affordable, simple, and flexible. A term life insurance policy allows the policy holder to manage and opt for a certain amount of years of paying for that kind of insurance.

One of the most obvious advantages of a Houston term life insurance is its affordability. It is said that it can give policy holders at least 40% in savings compared to other kinds of life insurance policies.
Another benefit of a term life insurance is that it can be converted into another type of life insurance policy without the hassle of going into another underwriting process or the policy holder going through a medical examination. For instance, if you have a convertible sum of $20,000, you can convert this into a cash policy without having to go through a medical assessment.

It can also be converted into a whole life policy, although this can cost you to pay higher premiums. However this can be advantageous to you especially if your body starts to betray you and your health deteriorates. It would also spare you the hassle of applying for another whole life insurance policy. However you can only convert your term life insurance policy to whole life insurance policy before you reach 65 years of age.

Another advantage of a Houston term life insurance is that it is renewable. This will allow you to change the terms of your term life insurance policy according to your state of health. This should augur well especially if you are in your middle ages.

Reader’s Question:

What if I just don’t tell the insurance company that I smoke? How are they going to know?

What they don’t know won’t hurt is what your thinking. This might save you some money in the short term but if something happened and they found out this would disqualify you from getting benefits. What would that mean to your loved ones left behind? It is really unthinkable, so don’t think about lying. Tell the truth because your loved ones deserve the very best care when you are gone.

Well I don’t smoke, but I do chew tobacco regularly? Does that count?
John

John,
Well it would seem that chewing would not damage your lungs so it shouldn’t be considered the same right? Wrong. Life insurance companies look at tobacco usage the same way they look at smoking and would raise your rates just the same. That is why I would recommend a company that specializes in covering people just like you. Save your self some time and effort look at companies that specialize in covering smokers.

I like smoking and I don’t want to stop. All of the insurance companies want to charge me more for smoking. How can I find life insurance that I can afford?
Anonymous

Anonymous,
There are actually a few niche insurance companies that specialize in covering smokers. They base their rates on the type of tobacco consumed and how often you consume them. You may be able to get the same rate as a non-smoker. Be sure to get quotes from more than one provider. If you fill out the form on this page it can help you with that. I wish you well on your search and hope you get a great rate.
